Private-label knitwear means the finished garment carries your approved brand identifiers, such as woven labels, care labels, hangtags and retail packing. These details should be planned with the sweater specification rather than added at the end, because their artwork, materials, minimums, positioning and approval can affect sampling, cost and bulk timing.

What buyers should decide first

  • Which labels, tags and packaging are required for this style.
  • Where each item sits on the garment or package.
  • The approved artwork files, dimensions, colours and copy.
  • Whether branding applies to a sample, bulk production, or both.
  • The quantity, target market and required delivery date.

Common private-label knitwear items

ItemPurposeWhat to provide
Woven main labelShows the brand identity inside the garmentArtwork, dimensions, colours, fold type and placement
Care and content labelRecords buyer-approved fibre, care and origin informationFinal copy, language version, layout and attachment position
HangtagSupports retail presentation and product informationPrint file, material, string, hole position and quantity
Size label or size markHelps retail teams identify the garment sizeSize range, format and location
PackagingProtects and presents the approved garmentBag, tissue, insert, sticker, carton marking and packing method

Not every program needs every item. A private-label brief should focus on the components that are actually required for the buyer’s product and channel. If a detail remains undecided, mark it as provisional rather than allowing it to be assumed.

Put branding details in the tech pack

Use a page or section in the tech pack for each branded component. Include the current artwork version, finished dimensions, material direction, placement reference, colour information and any buyer approval note. A photograph or line drawing with measurements is more reliable than a general instruction such as “label at neckline”.

How branding fits into sampling

Ask early whether the first development sample needs final labels and tags, or whether these will be confirmed later. Some early samples are used to review fit, construction and handfeel; branded components may be added at a later approval stage. The purpose of each sample should be agreed so the buyer knows what it proves and what remains open.

Rishi Apparel’s sampling stage is typically 7–15 days after workable design and material information is available. Sampling and bulk timing can change when artwork, labels, hangtags or packaging are still awaiting approval. See the knitwear sampling process for the stages from first sample to bulk approval.

How labels and packaging affect MOQ

Rishi Apparel’s usual garment MOQ starts from 100 pieces per style, subject to yarn, colour, construction and trims. A garment MOQ does not remove the minimums set by separate label, hangtag or packaging suppliers. For a focused first order, share the quantity by style and colour and ask which branded items create their own commercial constraints.

Our custom knitwear MOQ guide explains why yarn, colour, trims and order breakdown need to be reviewed together.

Private-label approval checklist

  1. Confirm garment style, quantity, colour and size breakdown.
  2. Provide current label, tag and packaging artwork files.
  3. State dimensions, placement and attachment method for each item.
  4. Confirm the buyer-approved wording for care and content information.
  5. Review branded components during the agreed sample stage.
  6. Keep approved artwork and sample comments with the bulk-production specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start with a logo only?

A logo is a useful starting point, but the factory also needs the intended label type, dimensions, placement and the approved artwork file. Hangtags and packaging require their own specifications.

Can branding be added after the sample?

It can be reviewed later when the first sample is only for fit or construction, but confirm the stage at which each branding item must be approved before bulk.

Do private labels change the production schedule?

They can. Artwork approval, material choice, supplier minimums and packaging details may need to be confirmed before a final bulk plan is released.
