To compare sweater manufacturing quotes, give each supplier the same product specification, quantity breakdown and delivery assumptions. Then compare what each price includes: yarn, garment weight, construction, sampling, labels, packaging, inspection and shipping arrangements. A lower unit price is only useful when it describes the product you actually intend to buy.

This guide is for brands, importers and wholesalers reviewing made-to-order knitwear proposals. It provides a practical comparison method, not a price benchmark: your design and order conditions determine the quotation.

In this guide

1. Send every supplier the same brief

A reference photo alone leaves too many decisions open. One supplier may quote a lighter garment or different yarn while another includes custom labels and more complex finishing. Record the current specification version and ask each supplier to identify assumptions and exclusions in writing.

Include front and back views, base-size measurements, fibre direction, stitch references, quantity by style and colour, size breakdown, trims and packing requirements. If the specification is incomplete, clearly mark what still needs development. Our knitwear tech pack guide explains how to organise those details.

2. Compare the complete quotation scope

Comparison itemWhat to confirmQuestion for the supplier
YarnComposition, yarn specification and colour approachIs this the requested yarn or an alternative?
Garment constructionWeight direction, stitch, measurements and finishingWhich assumptions still depend on the sample?
Order breakdownPieces per style, colour and sizeDoes the price apply to this exact breakdown?
DevelopmentSample charge, revision scope and sample shippingWhat would trigger an additional charge?
Branding and trimsLabels, buttons, zippers, artwork and hangtagsAre all specified items included?
PackingIndividual packing, carton requirements and markingWhich packaging specification is priced?
Quality reviewAgreed checks and any separately requested testingWhat is included and what needs separate approval?
Delivery and paymentDelivery scope, schedule, currency and payment termsWhich costs and timing assumptions remain outside the offer?

Use one row per supplier in your comparison sheet and retain the original quotation alongside it. Separate confirmed amounts from estimates and missing information. An empty cell should mean “not confirmed”, not “included at no cost”.

3. Ask what explains a lower price

A price difference is a reason to ask questions, not automatic evidence of better or worse quality. Check whether suppliers priced the same composition, garment weight, artwork, size distribution and finishing. Also compare order quantities: a price for one colour at a larger volume does not describe a smaller order split across several colours.

For example, consider two offers for 300 cardigans. One assumes a single colour with standard buttons; the other covers three colours and custom buttons. Ask both suppliers to reprice the same specification before ranking the offers. Read what affects custom knitwear MOQ when deciding whether a different quantity breakdown is practical.

If you need a lower target price, ask for a separate alternative proposal. Keep the original specification visible and list each proposed change, such as yarn direction, stitch complexity or trims. Approve the revised appearance and handfeel through sampling rather than accepting an unexplained substitution.

4. Compare timelines using the same starting point

Ask what starts the production clock. Does the quoted period begin after sample approval, material confirmation, order confirmation or another agreed milestone? Separate development, buyer review, bulk production and transport instead of treating them as one unexplained lead time.

Rishi Apparel typically allows 7–15 days for sampling, subject to design and material requirements. Approved bulk production normally takes 15–30 days, subject to yarn, construction, order size and approval status. These are planning ranges, not a promise that development and shipment will fit into the same period. The sampling process guide explains where buyer decisions enter the schedule.

5. Confirm the offer before authorising sampling

  1. Confirm the style reference, specification version and order breakdown.
  2. Record inclusions, exclusions and any proposed alternatives.
  3. Confirm sample scope, charges and the procedure for revisions.
  4. Ask which bulk-price assumptions will be reviewed after the sample.
  5. Agree how specification changes affect cost and schedule.
  6. Keep the approved offer and sample comments together for the next decision.

For an early-stage design, request a provisional quotation with clearly stated assumptions. For a production-ready design, request a more detailed scope review. Our OEM and ODM services cover development from a tech pack, authorised sample, reference image or initial idea.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose the cheapest sweater manufacturer?

Compare the specification, sample result, communication and complete commercial scope first. The lowest unit price may suit your brief, but a price alone cannot show whether important requirements were included.

Can a quote change after sampling?

It can if development changes the agreed yarn, weight, construction, trims or order scope. Ask the supplier to identify provisional assumptions before sampling and explain any revision before you approve bulk production.

Are sample charges refundable?

Do not assume they are. Ask whether any credit applies to a later order and which conditions govern it. Sample charges and credit arrangements need to be confirmed for the specific project.

What if I do not know the exact yarn yet?

Describe your intended handfeel, season, price position and care expectations. Request clearly identified yarn alternatives and compare them as separate options. Our yarn selection guide helps organise that discussion.
